I have successfully passed an MCA-approved GMDSS course and GMDSS examination. How do I obtain my GMDSS Certificate
Your result and paperwork are sent by the Regional Examination Centre Coordinator to AMERC National Administration Centre (NAC). Your certificate will be issued within 15 days of receipt of the paperwork by the NAC. How do I get my United Kingdom GMDSS certificate endorsed?
You will need to send your original GMDSS Certificate of Competence and attested copies of the following certificates:

  • Fire Prevention and Fire Fighting
  • Personal Survival Techniques
  • Elementary First Aid
  • Personal Safety and Social Responsibility

OR

  • United Kingdom Certificate of Competency
    AND
  • Valid Medical Fitness Certificate

How often does my GMDSS certificate need to be revalidated after the first endorsement?
After obtaining the initial endorsement GMDSS certificates must be revalidated every five years.

Which documents do you need to see to revalidate my certificate after the initial endorsement?
To revalidate your certificate we require the original GMDSS Certificate, notarised or attested copies of your Medical Fitness Certificate and entries from your Discharge Book showing evidence of 1 year sea service in the last 5 years.

How long will it take to endorse or revalidate my GMDSS certificate?
GMDSS endorsements and revalidations can take up to 15 days to complete.

Can I submit photocopies of my documents?
You must submit the original GMDSS certificate. Photocopies of other documents are acceptable, however they must have been attested as being true copies of the original by a solicitor, issuing administration, Notary Public, or by an authorised MCA official.

Is there a fee to endorse or revalidate my GMDSS Certificate?
No, there is no fee payable for the endorsement of a GMDSS certificate or revalidation. The only fee will be for the secure return (courier) of your documents, please refer to the payment section of the GMDSS application form.

How will my documents be returned?
The documents will be returned by Recorded Delivery to addresses within the UK. For addresses outside of the UK standard international mail will be used if no courier fee is included. If you would like your documents returned by courier, please refer to the application form.  If this method is chosen, you will need to include a contact telephone number to enable the courier to make the delivery. Courier service cannot be made without a contact telephone number.

How can I pay to have my documents returned by courier?
We accept cheques, postal orders, bankers’ drafts and credit/debit cards. These should be made payable to the ‘Maritime and Coastguard Agency’. Cash cannot be accepted. If you wish to pay by credit/debit card you will need to contact our customer helpline for a form (+ 44 (0)23 80 329 231).

I work as a radio operator on an offshore oil and gas installation - can I apply to the MCA for obtaining an endorsement confirming that my GMDSS certificate complies with the STCW Regulations?.
UK's Merchant Shipping Regulations do not apply to radio operators working on fixed offshore oil and gas installations in UK waters. Therefore you do not need to have your GMDSS certificate endorsed to show compliance with Regulation IV/2 of the STCW Convention, 1978, as amended. If you want an endorsement you must comply with all of the requirements above. The MCA does not accept Basic Safety Training Certificates that do not clearly state that they are issued in compliance with Regulation VI/1 of the STCW Convention, 1978, as amended Basic Offshore Safety & Induction Training (BOSIET) or Further Offshore Emergency Training (FOET) certificates approved by OPITO / COGENT are not accepted as they do not meet the Regulation VI/1 of the STCW Convention, 1978, as amended.

If I work on a fishing vessel can I endorse my GMDSS certificate?
Personnel working on fishing vessels are not required to have their GMDSS Certificates endorsed as they are not regulated under STCW78 (as amended) regulations.  If they require an endorsement they must comply with all of the requirements overleaf.  No certification from OPITO or COGENT will be accepted in lieu of the STCW basic training certification.

Where do I send my GMDSS Certificate if it is incorrect?

How do I replace a lost GMDSS Certificate?
If your GMDSS Certificate has been lost you need to contact the The Maritime & Coastguard Agency, Seafarer Training & Certification Branch, Spring Place, 105 Commercial Rd, SO15 1EG (deck@mcga.gov.uk) or AMERC NAC to obtain an application form. You are required to report the loss to the police.
