Further unconfirmed information regarding safety of lifebuoys
Following Safety Alert no 26 please click here (Adobe 20.0 KB) (attached for easy references) regarding a serious defect with lifebuoy type “Altura > 2.5 kg manufactured by Veleria S. Giorgio S.r.l. (Italy), cf; approved by Rina S.p.A (0474) the European Commission has informed Member States of possible further problems of the same nature with the following lifebuoys:
1. “EVAL, Lifebuoy Code:542” probably of Greek origin; reported by the Norwegian authorities,
2. “Perrybuoy Cosalt”(UK) – unconfirmed information, and
3. another product made or distributed by the firm “UNITOR”.
Taking above into account you are requested to take necessary measures to ensure that the lifebuoys placed on board ships and market are safe and conform to the requirements of the Marine Equipment Directive (96/98/EC) and inform MCA about these or similar cases.
