Maritime Labour Convention, 2006
Shipowner Training Courses 2011/12
The Maritime Labour Convention, 2006 is expected to enter into force internationally around mid-2012. The MLC will bring in, and set the new internationally agreed minimum living and working conditions for seafarers working at sea on board UK registered ships.
The MLC inspections will be carried out by the Maritime and Coastguard Agency, and shipowners will need to show their compliance with the new requirements. The MCA has designed and has now completeted delivery of a series of training seminars to prepare and equip shipowners in advance of these inspections.
The MCA has run four 2 day training sessions to date, each catered toward the specific sector of the maritime industry;
Passenger / Cruise Ships - Southampton - 18-19 May 2011
Cargo Ships/ Tankers - Liverpool - 9-10 June 2011
Offshore - Aberdeen 13th- 14 September 2011
Yachts - Monaco - 10-11 October 2011
Those Shipowners who attended benefitted from the first hand advice and guidance on interpretation of the requirements from the Regulator, and were able to put questions to the MCA and Social Partners directly. Following attendance, shipowners were able to take away with them the information and knowlege they needed to get their company policies, procedures and documentation in order, and in doing so enable MLC inspections to take place as efficiently as possible.Thereby greatly reducing the risk of detention in UK or other ports as a result.
Will the MCA be running a further course?...
The MCA with its Social Partners has given its consideration now to running a further training course, which would be open to anyone with an interest. The Course would be run in Southampton and limited to 100 places, and most likely scheduled to run towards the end of 2012, at this point the MCA anticipate that it will will be closer to ratification and be able to offer delegates specific details on UK interpretation and implementation. If you wish to register your interest simply complete the expression of interest form and email this us at (mlc@mcga.gov.uk) Closer to the course date MCA will then email you to advise of the course details and arrange for an invoice to be issued.(Approximately £265 per delegate)
