Trade Unions within the MCA

The Public and Commercial Service Union (PCS) is one of the biggest unions within the Civil Service. The Union represents the vast majority of staff in the Maritime and Coastguard Agency (MCA) and its aims and objectives are to look after their members’ interests by negotiating with management to improve conditions of service such as pay, pensions, hours, leave and training.

Nationally, there is an elected group executive to look after the interests of all grades that are represented by PCS. This committee has links with the wider Civil Service and other Civil Service unions to ensure that they do not fall behind in terms and conditions of service.

PCS also provide their members with additional services that include personal representation if help, advice or assistance is required. PCS will also arrange legal assistance for members and their families give initial advice on personal matters and a free will writing service. It also provides telephone help-lines with legal, medical, debt counselling, domestic violence and breast cancer care 24 hours a day.

If you require any more information, or membership application forms, please contact your local representative, or the MCA Deputy Group Secretary, Dave Clempson, on (01262) 403 203.

Prospect is an independent, thriving and forward-looking trade union with more than 105,000 members in the public and private sectors. Our members are engineers, scientists, managers and specialists in areas as diverse as agriculture, defence, energy, environment, heritage, maritime, shipbuilding and transport. We are the largest union in the UK representing professional engineers.

Prospect advises, defends and supports members if they have a problem at work. We also negotiate pay and conditions; campaign for jobs and standards; offer valuable benefits and services; and influence employers and government.

We negotiate with more than 300 employers, not just on pay and conditions but on a range of issues that affect our members' working lives: career development, contracts of employment, hours, leave, maternity, pensions, performance pay, promotion procedures, privatisation and company takeovers.

We are also an experienced campaigning body. Prospect is non-party political. But our members' expertise makes our voice count. On broad issues like energy policy and the quality of public services we bring members' views to the notice of key decision-makers.

We have the resources to be effective. For further information, or to join Prospect please contact your full-time professional Negotiations Officer Brian Fyfe on 01932 577020 or .
