MARITIME SECURITY

The events of 11 September 2001 sent shock waves that were to have a global impact, not least in the maritime community. At the International Maritime Organization (IMO) Diplomatic Conference in December 2002, amendments to SOLAS Chapter XI were adopted. A new Chapter XI-2 introduced regulations under the heading ‘Special Measures to Enhance Maritime Security’. The new regulations were implemented on 1 July 2004 and the Maritime Security Branch was developed to co-ordinate these functions

The Branch provides technical advice and guidance to internal and external customers to ensure the consistent application and maintenance of SOLAS XI and the International Ship and Port Facility Security Code (ISPS).
