In April 2004, Peterborough was selected by the Department for Transport as a Sustainable Travel Demonstration Town (STDT). The aim of the STDT programme was to showcase the role of ‘smarter choices’ measures in reducing car use. This programme was branded Travelchoice.

When Stoke-on-Trent received cycling town status, the city looked at ways to let people know about the accolade and involve them in the process.

Young cyclists in the North-East are taking to the big screen as part of an innovative scheme to get more girls riding bikes.
A media group in Darlington decided to tackle the issue of why the UK has the lowest number of young women cycling anywhere in Europe, and the result is the 40-minute documentary film, Beauty and the Bike.

Every Wednesday for the past year, cyclists have been meeting up on their journey between Keighley and Bradford to share their commute.
This social cycle, has a fixed route and timetable (a bit like a bus!), so that commuters can join and ride some or all of the route in the company of others.

Held in the beautiful Derby Cathedral, this event took place during Bike Week 2009 and was attended by numerous businesswomen. It is the first time that CTC’s Derby Cycle Champion Officer, Amanda has targeted ‘professional ladies’: “It’s really important that women who are involved in business, who have their own large networks of people they can influence, and who are often in the middle of raising a family too, are reminded that cycling is for everyone,” she explains.

The Grand Arcade indoor cycle park, located in Cambridge City Centre, has covered cycle parking spaces for over 200 bicycles. In addition the cycle shop run by Station Cycles, which is based inside the cycle park, offers over 200 valet cycle parking spaces on a daily or long term basis. Luggage lockers are also available from the shop. A free pushchair lending scheme initiated by Cambridge City Council and run by Station Cycles is available (more…)

The Bike It ‘Round the World’ race that begun in Lancaster was taken up by Sustrans Bike It Officers and schools nationally following it’s success in increasing cycle journeys to school in the past 2 years. This year 6 of our local Bike It schools raced over 100 Bike It schools from across England and between them they achieved a massive 5882 cycle journeys in 4 weeks! Most notable were Grosvenor Park and Bolton-le-Sands Primaries which averaged the equivalent of 27 and 26% of their pupils cycling each day (more…)

Transport for Buckinghamshire, who manage the Cycle Aylesbury cycle town project, recently celebrated the formal launch of one of the UK’s most exciting sustainable transport schemes - the Bourg Walk.
The centrepiece of the project is a stunning new 260m long, 4.6m wide pedestrian and cycle bridge over the railway which includes a 35m high mast. The new structure replaces a narrow footbridge over the railway (more…)

Pedal Back the Years is a long running and successful scheme that encourages people in Cornwall, and visitors too, to be more active through cycling. The key ingredients of Pedal Back rides are that they’re free to access, fun, sociable and run at a leisurely pace with a rest stop and complimentary cuppa too.
