Personality of the Month - Steve Cardno, LCN+ Project Manager

What is your job or other main activity that involves cycling?
I am the London Cycle Network Plus (LCN+) Project Manager.
How long have you done that?
I have worked in the LCN+ Project Management team here at the London Borough of Camden for 5 years and have been the Project Manager since September 2008.
Where do you live?
I live in Kentish Town in the London Borough of Camden.
What most encourages you about cycling where you live?
The London Borough of Camden has introduced segregated cycle facilities in various locations throughout the borough.
What most discourages you about cycling where you live?
Large concentrations of buses and HGV’s, which often travel faster than they should.
How would you describe yourself as a cyclist?
I am generally a leisure cyclist who enjoys getting from A to B by bike whenever I can.
What is you earliest cycling memory?
I can remember being given a tricycle with a rear boot for my schoolbag for my 6th birthday.
Where is the best place you have ever cycled?
I would have to say Holland where cyclists enjoy a much higher modal share compared to here in the United Kingdom.
What is your greatest achievement, in terms of encouraging more people to cycle?
I believe the ongoing development of 900km of fast, safe and comfortable LCN+ routes in London has been largely instrumental towards cycling levels in London increasing by 90% since 2000.
What single thing do you think would do most to encourage more cycling in the UK?
I believe that reducing speed limits on our non-strategic road networks (e.g. introducing 20mph speed limits) would encourage more people to cycle.
What has been your favourite cycling experience?
I spent a week cycling the Classic Cols of the Tour de France in the Pyrenees in September 2007.
What was your worst cycling experience?
I was unfortunate enough to be hit by a car whose driver didn’t see me one evening on my way home from work a couple of years ago, despite having lights on my bike and also wearing high visibility clothing.
What is it about using your bike that you like the most?
I love the sense of freedom and personal choice which I get from using my bike.
