The proposed safety camera related changes (by speed limit) are as follows:

Local speed limits (40mph, 50mph, 60mph on dual carriageways)

  • The General Directions currently require that repeater speed limit signs are placed "at regular intervals along a road".
  • The location of the camera will not always fit neatly with this and there will be occasions when an additional speed limit sign may be required to ensure that the speed limit can be seen in the same view as the camera.  This would interrupt the "regular" placement
  • Direction 11 is amended to allow, where repeaters are permitted, for an additional speed limit sign to be placed in the vicinity of a safety camera

Restricted roads (30mph limit due to presence of system of streetlights)

  • The General Directions prohibit the placing of repeater speed limit signs.  Important to retain national consistency on this point.  The Directions currently allow use of one camera informatory sign (diagram 880) at each camera site.
  • Direction 32 is amended to allow up to two camera informatory signs (diagram 880) to be used at each camera site
  • Additionally 30mph carriageway roundels will be allowed to be placed on the road surface in conjunction with diagram 880 where camera enforcement is taking place

National speed limit in force

  • Speed limit repeater signs are required on street lit roads where the National Speed Limit is in force.  The changes set out for local speed limits above can therefore apply.
  • Speed limit repeater signs are prohibited on non-street lit roads where the National Speed Limit is in force.  Important to retain national consistency on this point.
  • In July 2006 the Department specially authorised traffic authorities to use a variant of the camera informatory sign 880 which combines the camera warning sign with the National Speed Limit sign (diagram 880.1). This sign is now formally incorporated in TSRGD.
