Dear Sir/Madam,

BUS CONSTRUCTION REGULATIONS - CONSULTATION

1. This consultation seeks your views on whether to amend regulations in Great Britain to permit the use of buses and coaches which are approved to either one of two international regulations. These international regulations provide a standard of safety equivalent to that required by existing national regulations, but give alternative approval options for manufacturers, making it easier for those who sell buses in other countries.

2. The international regulations which we propose to accept are United Nations Economic Commission for Europe (UN ECE) Regulation No. 52 (Small bus construction) and Regulation No. 107 (Bus construction). These contain similar standards to those in EC Directive 2001/85/EC, which has already been recognised in national regulations.

3. The following documents are enclosed:

  • Consultation paper
  • Three draft Regulations
  • Code of practice on consultation
  • List of consultees

4. This consultation seeks views on the proposed amendments. Details of how to provide comments are provided in the Consultation paper. The deadline for comments is 20 March 2008.

5. General enquiries about bus construction regulations should be made to the following email address: tts.enquiries@dft.gov.uk
