Dear Consultee,
Public Consultation on Review of In-Vehicle Information Systems Legislation
The enclosed consultation document sets out the existing legislation about in-vehicle information systems and explains that it is currently being reviewed by the Department for Transport. The main reason for the review is that the technology involved in these systems has moved on very significantly since the legislation was made.
Our chief interest is to ensure, whether by legislation or other means:
- the safety of human-machine interface aspects of satellite navigation and other route guidance systems for drivers and hence for other road users; and
- that guidance offered by such systems is designed so as to avoid inappropriate routeing.
The consultation paper is being distributed widely and is also available on the Department's website (www.dft.gov.uk/roads/ivisconsultation). In preparing this we have complied with the Government's Code of Practice on Consultation (see summary criteria annexed to the consultation document).
We need your views on whether the current legislation is still fit for purpose, and if not, on what options for change you would consider appropriate. The consultation document invites your views on this and route guidance systems generally and a questionnaire is enclosed for you to complete. We are also interested in any further related comments you may have and the questionnaire allows space for this.
A list of those contacted is also enclosed. Please let us know of any others who may wish to be involved in the consultation process.
The consultation period starts on 9 October 2006 and ends on 9 January 2007. Please return completed questionnaires to me in hard copy, by email or via the website by the closing date. This is a preliminary consultation: your responses will be considered in developing any firm proposal for change. Any such proposal will be subject to further public consultation as part of the statutory process.
Yours faithfully,
Frances Evans
