Dear Sir/Madam,
Ports Policy Review consultation
In The Future of Transport White Paper (July 2004) the Government undertook to review the policy framework for ports. The preparatory work for this review is now complete, and we now need to know what you think. Today, we are launching our discussion document, Ports Policy Review - Your Views Invited, in conjunction with the Welsh Assembly Government and the Department for Regional Development in Northern Ireland. Please do take the time to read it. We introduce a series of questions which think should be addressed by all of those with an interest in an effective ports sector.
I also draw your attention to the two reports we have commissioned from consultants MDS Transmodal as supporting analysis for the Review process. These reports, on freight demand forecasts and on container transhipment, are also available at the above website, and I commend them to those of you with a detailed interest in these matters.
I hope you will take the opportunity to respond to our questions, in as much or as little detail as you want to, or have time to. The deadline for responses is Friday 1 September. Your views matter to us. We will study all responses, and on that basis formulate policy proposals to ensure that we continue to have a sustainable and successful ports sector into the longer term.
You may choose to respond by post, or by e-mail. The address for postal responses is:
Mrs Sabina Ali/Mr Mike Davey
Department for Transport
2/31 Great Minster House
76 Marsham Street
London
SW1P 4DR
marking the envelope "PPR RESPONSE" at the top-left corner, or you can e-mail your response to:
portsconsult@dft.gsi.gov.uk
A summary of the consultation will be published on the DfT website after the consultation period ends. Paper copies will be available on request.
In anticipation of your responses, many thanks for taking the time to send us your views.
Yours faithfully,
Phil Carey
