Lesson Plans

Our lesson plans have been specially designed to help support pupils’ learning as they get started and progress through a Bikeability course.
They’re not just for a rainy day though – we’ve got some clear discussion guides and activity guides for you to download to help pupils think about all the different benefits of cycling, the impact of cycling on their health, and the best route to school in fun and interactive ways.

The benefits of cycling

Pupils will already have a good idea of the benefits of cycling and will probably know that it can help keep them fit and healthy. These activities will focus on why going by bike is a great option and the reasons why it comes out on top against a car journey.

Try out the cycling diary game, where pupils follow a class of young cyclists as they cycle to school over six weeks. The diary outlines the health benefits of cycling, includes a diary entry from one of the characters and also a question. The pupils move from week to week by clicking on the first week, answering the question and moving on to the next stage until all weeks have been viewed.
The pupils then have the opportunity to download a blank diary template for their personal or classroom use.

These activities help pupils think about how they can make good choices based on how safe they will be on different roads.

Try out the find the best route game, where pupils get to choose the best route to take for different journeys on a bike. They are given a map of an area which comprises different types of road: highways, quiet roads and cycle paths and include traffic lights, roundabouts, pelican crossings and footbridges. Pupils are given three possible route choices for each journey (each choice is highlighted on the map).
Once pupils have chosen their preferred route, they can explore their journey. On their journey, they are asked questions and given information related to road awareness. They earn points for each good answer given. At the end of the game, they get feedback on the route chosen.
