The Department is under a specific duty to publish a Disability Equality Scheme (DES) which demonstrates how it intends to fill both its general and specific duties under the Disability Equality Duty (the action plan).

This is the Department's first DES which covers both the central Department and its Executive Agencies.

The Department is must implement certain aspects of its Scheme and, within three years of its being published, take the steps set out in its action plan (unless it is unreasonable or impractical for it to do so). Future Schemes will also be posted on these pages.

Annual Reporting

The Department is also under a duty to publish an annual report containing a summary of the steps it has taken under the action plan, the results of its information gathering and the use to which it has put that information. Annual reviews will also be posted on these pages when they are due.

Secretary of State Duties

In addition to the annual reporting process, the Secretary of State for Transport must also produce a report detailing an overview of the progress made by the Department in relation to disability equality and its proposals for co-ordination of action with other public authorities which are subject to the duty to bring about further progress on disability equality. The first Secretary of State report is due in December 2008 and will also be posted on these pages.
