This is an exciting opportunity to lead a major government agency through a period of transition. The agency has a large, widely dispersed workforce exercising key regulatory functions. The challenges are to:
• oversee and quality assure the MoT vehicle roadworthiness testing system;
• ensure consistent roadworthiness testing of commercial and public service vehicles;
• lead change and modernise the organisation to become more strongly customer-focused;
• drive for greater efficiency, exercising tight cost control;
• work closely with colleagues in the central department and in other DfT agencies to ensure best value, integrated approaches are taken in service delivery and enforcement activities;
• advise Ministers and the central Department on the nature and direction of the change programme.

The Director General, Corporate Support Functions, is a new role. The successful candidate will bring strategic leadership to the planning, performance management and business assurance of a Departmental budget of nearly £20bn, 17,000 people and a balance sheet of £90bn.

As a key member of the Department’s Executive Committee and Management Board, the Director General, CSF will play a key role in ensuring the Department’s resources and plans align closely with the Department’s overall strategy. Encouraging radical solutions is key, both for major programmes and for the day to day operation of the central Department and its 7 Agencies. The individual will:

• Ensure the best use of resources to deliver the Department’s goals within the framework of the published plans for public spending over the medium term;
• Contribute to the strategic direction of the Department, and build the capability to support that strategy;

The Air Accident Investigation Branch (AAIB) is part of the DfT whose purpose is to ‘Improve aviation safety by determining the causes of air accidents and serious incidents and making safety recommendations intended to prevent recurrence’. The AAIB investigates accidents and incidents to civil aircraft in the UK and overseas where there is a UK interest.


The AAIB is looking for someone who is highly motivated, flexible and enthusiastic to work within the Information Unit which is responsible for handling notifications of accidents and incidents, and providing support to the Duty Co-ordinators in their role.
This is a good quality, demanding and interesting post supporting Inspectors of Air Accidents (professional pilots and engineers) in their investigations into aircraft accidents and incidents.


The AAIB site is not served by public transport but there is a car park on site.
