Copyright licensing for publishers
The Department for Transport (DfT) is keen to facilitate the licensing of its copyright material to publishers. Such licences can range from permissions for the reuse of short extracts through to 'Rights of the Official Publisher' agreements for complete publications.
The material produced by the DfT is subject to Crown copyright protection unless otherwise indicated. For more information about Crown copyright, see the Office of Public Sector Information (OPSI) website.
Crown copyright: licensing for private and non-commercial use
Crown copyright protected material (other than departmental or agency logos) may be reproduced free of charge in any format or medium for non-commercial research, private study or for internal circulation within an organisation. This is subject to the material being reproduced accurately and not used in a misleading context.
Crown copyright: licensing for publishing
Where any of the DfT's Crown copyright material is to be published or copied to others beyond those limited purposes, a licence from HMSO is needed, the source of the material must be identified, the copyright status must be acknowledged, and any usage fees incurred must be paid.
If you wish to publish DfT Crown copyright items, please apply for the appropriate Click-Use online licence by visiting OPSI's website or by writing to OPSI at The Licensing Division, OPSI/HMSO, St Clement's House, 2-16 Colegate, Norwich NR3 1BQ.
If you would like to develop a new publication based on DfT's Crown copyright material - such as published transport statistics, policy guidance or research reports, listed at www.publications.dft.gov.uk - please contact the Publishing Officer, 5/09 Great Minster House, 46 Marsham Street, London SW1P 4DR.
The DfT also puts out some publication proposals, such as new volumes of statistics, to competitive tender. If you would like to be considered for such competitions, contact the Publishing Officer. The winning publisher becomes the official publisher, but the rights are always licensed on a non-exclusive basis, as well as being subject to other conditions. For details, see Publishing for DfT - a guide for publishers and officials.
